Tapped In- then tapped out

January 21, 2008 | |

I went through the tips and tricks tour for Tapped In on Sunday afternoon.  I immediately was impressed with the way technology has advanced and what a help it can be to me specifically.  I am planning on going through some more tours whenever my schedule can allow it.  I can see how the space can be used to meet with a group of people or leave messages for each other.  It is a great way to connect.  I thoroughly enjoyed my experience.

Then, I had a surprise visit from family.  I left my laptop alone for a while.  When going back to my computer to blog about my experience, my computer promptly stopped working correctly.  Over the next two hours, I tried to uninstall, reinstall everything I needed to get the “technology” to work.  Needless to say my excitement over this new tapped in technology faded when the realization that I am still at the mercy of whatever the “technology” I am using seems to want to do.  I know, I know it doesn’t do anything without me helping it along.  I wish the technology could read my mind ( or no, never mind, it’s scary in there) and do what I need it to do, when I need it to do it.

I think this incident for me is exactly the reason a lot of educators are hesitant about technology.  If it doesn’t work when I need it, when there are thirty 8th graders staring at me waiting impatiently to begin, what good is it?  Why take the chance to use it?

Luckily, I still have my desktop, so I watched a little football last night, got a good nights sleep and woke up this morning with an attitude adjustment about technology. I realize the world didn’t end because I had a little technology issue.  I have still managed to make this post and my day is now beginning with a cup of coffee and another encounter with technology (which I will survive).

My husband has gotten so mad at the computer in the past because it seemed like for the longest time that whenever he wants to log onto some site, it will ask to download something, which will take a few minutes, etc. He doesn’t get on the computer very much, so I figure whenever he gets on a site that they have updated somethings from the last time he was there.

His frustration is not so bad now since his last vist was to Cabelas.com and all went well.

I agree, this is why I have difficulty putting my full faith into technology. Because when it doesn’t work, boy IT DOESN’T WORK. This is so frustrating, and like small children, it always picks the wrong time to start acting up. We know we shouldn’t abandon it altogether but when it puts us in a bind it makes it difficult to be so forgiving.
