Not on the Test

I found this song very funny, yet, oh so true. I think in preparing for the test, we forget some of the most important things about education. Although, I agree that some kind of testing is needed, it seems in the state of Kentucky, we have been focused on test, test, test for my whole career as an educator.
I was in college when CATS testing first began. I have seen it go through various stages and changes. One thing has remained the same, the sun continues to come up everyday. Sometimes, I have to remind my colleagues, no matter what happens with testing, life will go on. We will get a new group next year.
I know it is important to perform well. I know it is important for students to help themselves and do well. I also know testing makes such a little difference in the grand scheme of life.

Yes, life does go on and the sun does shine; however, it is hard when there are some who still continue to point fingers if the scores go down. Just once I would like to hear, “It doesn’t matter what the scores say, I know you are a good teacher.” I have always said it is more important that the students learn than what the test scores say. Students have bad days just like teachers and the day they test my content may just have been a bad day. I am proud of them if they give it their all, regardless of the score they receive.
